4 dead, including police chief, after Ohio nursing home shooting

Officer shot in central Ohio Four people, including a police chief, were killed in a shooting at a nursing home in central Ohio Friday. An officer was shot at the Pine Kirk Care Center in Kirkersville, which is about 25 miles east of Columbus, WLWT News 5’s NBC affiliate in Columbus NBC4 reports. Kirkersville police chief Steven Eric Disario, 36, died in the shooting. Police said that he has six children. Police have not released the identities of the other three people, though they said that two were employees and they believe that one of the deceased was the shooter. Disario was dispatched to the nursing home for a report of a person with a gun, Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said. When other officers arrived, Disario was lying in the street, deceased. The other three were found dead inside the nursing home. They have not identified the shooter. The nursing home has 23 residents, Thorp said. Some residents barricaded themselves in their rooms during the shooting. None of the residents were injured. They have been taken to other nursing homes or hospitals to stay until the crime scene is processed. Disario had been the police chief for about three weeks, Thorp said. “It’s just a tragic event,” Thorp said. “I guess the only piece of mind is that the threat is over. We don’t have anybody running around that is going to pose a threat to the community. Now is just a time to process what’s happened and put our arms around that family.” The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been asked to lead the investigation into the shooting. WLWT News 5 will update this story as details become available.
