Introduction

The Growing Threat Training Series is a collection of free educational resources created for martial arts school owners, instructors, and community leaders. Designed by Tracy Lee Thomas, a veteran, strategist, and lifelong instructor, this series teaches modern personal safety through the G.E.A.R. Method: Guard, Evacuate, Avoid, Resist. These principles are simple to understand, easy to teach, and effective in real-world situations.

THE G.E.A.R. METHOD

A Universal Survival Framework

Guard

Stay aware, stay alert, and maintain active situational awareness. Most threats can be avoided early when students understand how to identify environmental risks and behavioral warning signs.

Evacuate

Time is never on your side. If escape is possible, students should learn to break contact immediately, create distance, and move toward safety without hesitation.

Avoid

If evacuation isn’t possible, take strategic avoidance measures — using barriers, angles, positioning, concealment, and misdirection to reduce exposure to danger.

Resist

When no other option remains, resistance becomes a survival decision. This step includes last-resort defensive actions designed to disrupt, disarm, or break away long enough to escape.

This method gives instructors a consistent framework for teaching modern defensive readiness across all age groups.
